In 30 seconds

  • In the Google Trends data gathered by Mentoniano, searches for sales conventions peak in February.
  • According to Sebrae, ABEOC Brasil and FIEC, the events sector earned R$ 813.5 billion in 2024, 4.6% of Brazil's GDP.
  • In the Amex GBT forecast for 2026, half of event professionals expect more internal team meetings.
  • The peak-end rule, used here as an analogy, suggests writing the high point and the closing with special care.

February is the month when Brazil searches Google the most for sales conventions ("convenção de vendas"). In the Google Trends data gathered by Mentoniano in October 2026, the term scores 352 in February, on a scale where the monthly average of the last five years equals 100. March (197) and January (129) come next, and November (152) brings the first rise of the cycle. The index compares the term with itself and shows the calendar of searches without measuring volume. It confirms what every organizer feels: the convention that opens the sales year starts being decided months in advance, and what the team will remember depends on the text written during that preparation.

Sales conventions in Brazil: an event within an R$ 813 billion sector

The sales convention is part of a large sector. According to the III Dimensionamento do Setor de Eventos no Brasil (Third Sizing of the Events Sector in Brazil), carried out by Sebrae (the Brazilian small business support agency) with ABEOC Brasil (the Brazilian association of event companies) and FIEC (the Ceará state industry federation) and reported by PANROTAS and IstoÉ Dinheiro in May 2026, about 300,000 companies earned R$ 813.5 billion in 2024. The amount equals 4.6% of GDP. The sector held 10.1 million events and accounted for about 12.7 million jobs.

This total covers every type of event. According to IstoÉ Dinheiro, 55.2% of the events monitored are sociocultural, and neither report breaks out the share of corporate conventions. The figure sizes the market in which your company hires venues, set design and agencies. Within it, each convention competes for a few hours of attention from a team that spends the rest of the year on the road and on the phone.

What a kickoff is and what organizers expect for internal meetings

In many companies, the sales convention is called a kickoff. Gartner's sales glossary defines the sales kickoff as a high-profile event in which the organization communicates its sales strategy and motivates frontline sellers, usually at the start of the fiscal year. Both tasks in the definition, communicating and motivating, depend on words.

People who work in events expect more gatherings of this kind. In the Amex GBT Meetings & Events 2026 forecast, conducted by YouGov with 601 event professionals from eight countries in July 2025, half expect more internal team meetings, and 40% expect the same number. Nearly 9 in 10 expect spending on meetings and events to grow: 5% foresee a large increase, 36% an increase and 47% a slight increase.

How to organize a sales convention starting from the script

In the 5th edition of Salesforce's State of Sales, which surveyed 7,775 sales professionals in 38 countries in 2022, sellers spent 28% of their week selling, and 69% said selling had become harder. The survey is global and comes from a company that sells sales software. It helps to picture who is in the audience: someone who traded days in the field for a day at an event and expects to leave with direction.

In our view, organizing a sales convention starts with the question the team will take home. Once that question is answered, the agenda becomes a script with a beginning, middle and end, and each piece gets a role:

  • The opening sets the tone and the question of the year.
  • The leadership speech sets the course and makes commitments.
  • The activities let the team live the message as a group.
  • The targets presentation turns numbers into a path.
  • The awards recognize those who made the previous year happen.

The script ties these pieces into a single thread. The opening video sets up the speech, the speech announces the activity, and the awards close the arc that the opening began. With this thread written, the agency, production company and leadership all work from the same story. The step-by-step guide is in our article on scripts for sales conventions, and the guide to corporate event scripts covers the formats.

What the audience keeps after the convention

Redelmeier and Kahneman recorded in real time the pain of 154 colonoscopy patients and 133 lithotripsy patients and found that the memory of the procedure was strongly linked to the worst moment and to the end, with little weight given to duration. The study measured pain in medical procedures. We use the so-called peak-end rule as an analogy: the memory of an experience tends to rest on a few strong moments and on the way it ends.

At a convention, this calls for a peak planned in advance and a closing written with the same care as the opening. Late afternoon, when part of the audience is already checking their flight time, usually gets the most rushed text on the agenda, and that is the text that closes the memory of the day.

In the Freeman Trust Report 2025, a survey by The Harris Poll of 1,824 US office workers who attended an in-person event for work, 95% came to trust brands more after the event, and 47% said the positive perception lasts a few months or longer. Freeman sells event services, the sample is from the US, and the study measured brand events in general without looking at internal conventions.

A convention told as a story: the Farmácias São Paulo case

At the 2025 annual employee convention of Farmácias São Paulo (a Brazilian pharmacy chain), themed Navio Pirata (Pirate Ship), Léo Bento wrote a treasure hunt activity, working with the production company REC Mart. The managers were split into groups at Parque do Ingá and followed the clues to the treasure. The convention film ends with the reveal on the main stage: the treasure was Purpose. The line that closed the story was "Those who have Purpose never get lost." The case is on the page of REC Mart. The theme, the activity, the film and the stage told the same story.

The scriptwriter can also join the event agency's team. gLue, an agency from Maringá, brought Léo in to write the emotional layer of the experience script for Encontrinho da Carola, an event by aiqfome, a company of the Magalu group, and later an activity for licensees. Leadership, creative, production and delivery belong to gLue; the script took care of what each guest would experience and keep. The details are in the gLue and aiqfome case.

The pieces of the sales convention, one by one

From here on, Conventions that become stories opens up each piece of the event. The next articles cover the sales kickoff and the fresh start effect of the new year, how to choose a sales convention theme that becomes a story, the activities the team remembers after the event, and the corporate event opening. Then come the CEO speech, the event opening video, sales awards, presenting targets, the annual employee convention, measuring the results of a corporate event, and working with a scriptwriter for events.

If you are already building the agenda, the corporate event activities and scripts we write start from one question: what does this audience need to feel to believe in the year that is starting? For the opening speech, also read the article on convention and year-end speeches.

Frequently asked questions about sales conventions

When does the sales convention take place?

Usually at the start of the fiscal year, according to Gartner. In Brazil, Google searches for the term peak in February, followed by March and January, according to Google Trends data gathered by Mentoniano.

Are a sales convention and a kickoff the same thing?

Gartner defines the sales kickoff as the event in which the company communicates its sales strategy and motivates frontline sellers. Here on the blog, we treat both names as the same gathering.

How do you organize a sales convention?

Start with the question the team will take home and organize the opening, speech, activities, targets and awards as a script with a beginning, middle and end. The peak-end rule, studied by Redelmeier and Kahneman in medical procedures, suggests taking care of one strong moment and of the closing.

In practice

  • Write in one sentence the question the team should take home and give that sentence to every supplier.
  • Build the agenda as a script, marking the role of each piece: opening, speech, activity, targets and awards.
  • Choose the peak moment of the day in advance and reserve time and text for the closing.
  • Start planning in November, when searches for the topic rise again, so you reach February with the script approved.
